Well you can separate this into two different categories.

Adjusted Sack Rate is FO's big stat for pass rush. It adjusts for the quality of offensive lines you've faced.

2009: 29th (5.4%)
2008: 24th (5.4%)
2007: 22nd (6.0%)
2006: 26th (5.8%)
2005: 5th (8.2%)

Smith and Bush are about the same here. I know it's early. Bush blitzes a lot more but the sack rate just isn't there. Imagine how bad the 2005 secondary was to be 5th in sack rate and still be the worst defense in the NFL.

As far as improvement...well, Richard Smith never had Brian Cushing. I know texanphil had some convincing quotes that said that Bush loved Cushing and was "his guy", and that'd make him a hell of a scout. The defense is much improved because the talent is improved. I don't think the scheme does the talent justice.

Good shit Rivers. As always.

About Frank Bush. Im still not a big fan of him but he's definitely and improvement over Richard Smith. Remember when how horrible the zone blitzes were back in the day? I would yell at the TV every time i'd see Mario dropping back to coverage and Anthony Weaver sleeping in his casket.

And about the pass rush being ineffective, how bad do we suck at it? When im watching the defense play and they bring on the pressure, they dont always get to the QB but I see them force the QB to throw more often than not. Maybe im just in awe every time I see Mario destroy somebody at the line but I actually think our pass rush is decent.
